Clinical Framework

A thorough, evidence-based approach to validation.

Care Haven Pets provides structured, clinically informed assessments to determine whether an Emotional Support Animal or Psychiatric Support Animal is appropriate for individuals across eleven states. We evaluate a wide range of emotional and psychiatric concerns, including anxiety disorders, depressive symptoms, trauma‑related experiences, stress‑induced emotional challenges, and difficulties with emotional regulation. Our goal is to understand how these conditions impact daily functioning and whether animal‑assisted support may offer meaningful therapeutic benefit.

We also review functional impairments that may interfere with everyday life. This includes challenges such as maintaining emotional stability, managing stressors without adequate support, coping with sleep disturbances related to emotional distress, and navigating periods of reduced motivation, social withdrawal, or emotional overwhelm. These factors help us determine how an ESA or PSA might contribute to improved emotional balance and daily functioning.

Care Haven Pets further examines behavioral and coping patterns that influence emotional well‑being. We look at avoidance tendencies, emotional shutdown or freeze responses, heightened irritability, difficulty self‑soothing, and reliance on coping strategies that may not be effective. Understanding these patterns allows us to identify areas where animal‑assisted support may enhance emotional regulation and provide grounding during stressful situations.

Finally, we consider clinical indicators that suggest an ESA or PSA could offer therapeutic value. Many individuals experience improved emotional grounding, reduced anxiety symptoms, increased calm, and greater stability when interacting with animals. We assess whether these benefits may support emotional wellness, reduce isolation, and enhance daily functioning for those seeking ESA or PSA eligibility.

Understanding Your Options

What Is an Emotional Support Animal (ESA)?

ESAs provide comfort through companionship. They are not required to be task-trained and do not have the same public access rights as service dogs; they may have limited protections under housing law when properly documented.

What Is a Psychiatric Service Animal (PSA)?

A Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) is a type of service dog trained to help people with psychiatric disabilities (e.g., PTSD, panic disorder) and is treated as a service dog under ADA.
